First Blog Post!
This is my first blog post and hopefully one of many. In this space, I’ll reflect on shows, studio sessions, new vocal discoveries, writing and performing. Maybe I’ll even share some wild stories, nightmares and highlights from my early days singing at rodeos and competitions. Just overall blabbing, okay?
Which I guess brings me to why I started this site. From my years around vocalists I’ve noticed a shared truth among most of us: we’re fiercely protective of our craft and identity. Understandably so, our voices come from deep places, sometimes visceral pain, sometimes bright memories. Because our vocals feel so personal, connecting with a coach can be really hard,
I’ve worked with some incredible coaches early on, people who helped shape my journey in powerful ways. But there were more often times when I felt misunderstood, mishandled, even used for marketing. It was overall kind of a rough experience and left me jaded for a lot of years.
After years of putting in serious work on my voice, my mindset and my presence in a fairly public way, I realized that I would be so happy if I could help even one person by just being the coach I needed. Someone real, judgement-free, and flexible. Someone who understands what it’s like to perform through extreme anxiety, alchemize depression and in my case do it all with undiagnosed autism.
Life is complicated, sometimes messy, often inspiring. In my humblest of opinions the more badasses we can get using their voices honestly and powerfully, with all their emotions and contradictions, the stronger and more connected we become. Our voices can build a collective that is bigger than any one of us. And I don’t know about you, but I’m just sick of pretending like that’s not cool as f.
